Hockney
I also thought that the charcoal drawings were one of the best tings in the show. They showed Hockney's skill as a draughtsman.
Hockney Exhibition
I really liked the charcoal drawings - lots of texture and detail - highlight of the show for me.
I'm not sure that I like the use of colour in some of the paintings - a bit too garish for me.
I agree with Derek that they can seem a little naive on the surface, but it's well worth looking beyond the first glance.
Hockney again
I'm still not convinced that the current exhibition at the RA says anything useful. I have mentioned the Sermon on the Mount group elsewhere - have you looked with critical eyes at his totems? If he is saying anything, it must be about emasculation. So many pieces have paint straight out of the tubes. So many are almost identical. Then there is the use of paint from a drying palette - gobs of the stuff already skinning over before they hit the canvas. Perhaps he is saying, "Clean your palette and brushes before you attack your canvas!" OK, I've learned that lesson...
Hockney Show
Perhaps he is just saying " Go out and paint and enjoy yourself. Who worries about technique, just have a good time".
I do'nt think he is trying to tell you anything special, except to paint what attracts you.
